What is STEM?

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are fundamental to our lives. Who can imagine a world without modern transport, medicines, Wi-Fi and smartphones? All these were created thanks to the fields known collectively as STEM.

STEM is about more than fancy gadgets and medical innovations. It embodies a way of questioning, testing and analysing that enables you to draw conclusions based on evidence. A way of thinking about the world that will benefit you in far-reaching ways beyond the specific disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

STEM is responsible for the great innovations that make our world better. Research reveals that 75 percent of the fastest growing occupations require STEM skills and knowledge* and a degree in these areas will prepare you for careers in global scientific, technological and engineering revolutions.

You can study areas as diverse as nanoscience, molecular biology, robotics, biomedical engineering and computing. With major technological advances opening up many new areas, from ecosystems to nanotechnology, there has never been a more fascinating time to study STEM.

The STEM Enrichment Academy

In 2017, Clancy Catholic College began our partnership with the University of Sydney’s STEM Enrichment Academy.

The College has included STEM education as one of our key goals for preparing our students for life beyond the classroom. Our partnership with the STEM Enrichment Academy has helped to shape our vision for STEM at Clancy College.

We found that there was already an enormous amount of cross-over between our Science, Math and Technology courses. To help highlight this connection to students, we’ve brought this together under a single project umbrella. By implementing this transdisciplinary approach, we are able to to better support student learning by providing practical application of often theoretical knowledge and skill.



Our STEM Project – the #ClancyWildRide


The #ClancyWildRide was a project designed by a team of teachers from across our key STEM subject areas – Science, Technology, and Mathematics. The project requires our Year 8 students to work collaboratively to DESIGN, PRODUCE, TEST, ANALYSE, and EVALUATE a concept model for a Water Slide.
Throughout the project students learn to think critically and creatively as they develop their solution to the task at hand. Students use their knowledge and skills of scientific experimentation to select materials, their knowledge and skills in designing and producing a solution, and their knowledge and skills in data analysis to determine if their proposed solution is a successful one.

The project launched in Week 4, Term 2, 2018 and will continue until Week 10, Term 2.



The Situation:

Waterslides are an engaging and exciting attraction at theme parks because they incorporate a range of forces and motion. To increase engagement in the senior woodlands, Wet and Wild and Clancy Catholic College are collaborating to engage students by applying science and mathematics through design.

The Design Brief:

Collaboratively design, test, produce and evaluate an innovative model of a water slide and ride logo to present to Wet and Wild for the senior woodlands area at Clancy Catholic College.
