Clancy Software Update
Clancy Software Update is a small piece of software provided and produced by Clancy Catholic College ICT. Its main function is to provide students using BYOD devices with the ability to automatically update their laptops whilst on site with any software that is provided for their use through Clancy Catholic College. In addition to this function, a data collection element has been integrated as part of the install process so that we may maintain a database with essential and identifying details of BYOD devices used in our college.

How do I install or uninstall Clancy Software Update?
There are two software packages available contained within the one downloadable zip file at the top of this page. One is ‘Install Clancy Software Update.pkg’ and must be installed whilst on site at Clancy Catholic College. This can be installed on any Mac (OS 10.11+). The ‘Uninstall Clancy Software Update.pkg’ can be run to remove Clancy Software Update from your computer.
When I open the installer it says that it ‘can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer’. How do I open it?
Whilst holding the ‘Control’ button on your keyboard, click on the ‘Install Clancy Software Update’ package, then select ‘Open from the menu that pops up. You should now have the option to click on ‘Open’ in the dialog box that pops up. Then the installer will proceed as normal.
What is this ‘automatically update’ function and how does it work?
Clancy Software Update will regularly check our servers for any new software packages that have been placed there by Clancy Catholic College ICT and install them. By default it will attempt to do this every 2 hours invisibly without user intervention and install any new software packages in the background if needed. If there are no new software packages, nothing happens.
How do I know what is being installed?
There is a ‘Clancy Software Update’ app that is placed into your ‘Applications’ folder. When opened, it will present you with an option to ‘Open Log’. This will tell you which software packages have been installed and when. Alternatively, we will advertise on this website the software packages that have been placed there for student installation with details.
What if I don’t want my BYOD device to automatically update with Clancy Software Update?
In the ‘Clancy Software Update’ app in your ‘Applications’ folder, you are presented with the ‘AutoUpdate Options’ button. Once selected, this will allow you to either ‘Enable AutoUpdate’ or ‘Disable AutoUpdate’. In addition to this, the Clancy Software Update’ app has the option to ‘Update Now’. This will initiate the update process manually and can be used in place of the AutoUpdate function.
What is the ‘data collection element’ and what does it do?
We are required to collect the serial number and network hardware numbers from every BYOD device in the college. To make this process easier, we have integrated this collection as part of the install process for Clancy Software Update. It is basically a set of questions in dialog boxes that will ask for student username, year group and pastoral class as identifying details for the hardware numbers collected from the device. The data is then uploaded to our server for collection.
What happens if I don’t install ‘Clancy Software Update’?
You are not required to install ‘Clancy Software Update’, however if you do not, you will not have access to install necessary educational software provided by Clancy Catholic College. This is the only means by which we will be distributing software to student BYOD devices.
